An in vitro fermentation study identified Bifidobacterium strains that grew with fructooligosaccharide (FOS), producing acetate and lactate short chain fatty acids. [1]
A double-blind randomized, placebo-controlled, dose-response study evaluated 80 participants who were administered FOS at 2.5, 5, and 10 gram per day doses or a placebo (10g/day maltodextrin). Results showed an increase in Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus species as well as some butyrate-producing microbes (Faecalibacterium, Ruminococcus and Oscillospira). [2]
A clinical study evaluated the effect of 3g FOS per day compared to a placebo in healthy female volunteers. When they consumed FOS, the participants had better stool frequency compared to placebo. [3]
